Chapter Ten

Alone Again

Antonio spent the next month making arrangements to have himself, as Tom Corey, and Christina Brandon accepted in medical school at Ohio State University. He felt he needed a medical degree to keep the government off his back. He bought the apartment complex that was located next to the university. He assigned a room for Christina and a room for himself across the hall from her. A week later, Vicki called Antonio to tell him that she had decided to go back to school. He had no problem making arrangements for her to return to Western Reserve University. He had to make a sizable endowment to both universities. He agreed that if they did not meet the requirements, they could be expelled.

The beginning of school was about two weeks away when Antonio heard from Roland.

“Antonio,” he said, “the trial for Harry will begin next week. Please plan on being there with Sally.”

“We'll be there.” said Antonio. He contacted Sally and informed her of the trial date.

“I'm sure you will be called to testify,” said Antonio. “It is important you identify the man that kidnapped you.”

“I will never forget his face as long as I live,” explained Sally.

“Good–” said Antonio, “Roland has found the man.”

Two days later Antonio and Sally were in a hotel in Portland, Oregon. Roland had gotten permission to practice law in Oregon.

Sally identified Bruce Tomko as the man who had kidnapped her. He took the offer and identified Harry as the man who hired him. Roland also produced the bank clerk, who identified Harry as the depositor of the million dollars.

Two days later they were in court for the trial of Harry Wendworth. Roland had helped the prosecutor set up all of the witnesses. Bruce Tomko was the first witness called by the prosecution.

“Tell us in your own words–What is your relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Wendworth?” asked the prosecutor.

“We are acquaintances,” said Bruce.

“Have you done any work for Mr. Wendworth?”

“What kind of work are you talking about?” asked Bruce trying to refrain from committing himself.

“You know what I mean,” said the prosecutor. “Let's not play games. If I have to declare you as a hostile witness, the DA's offers are off as to the charges against you.” This statement frightened Bruce. He didn't want to lose his deal with the District Attorney.

“I was paid to kill his wife,” confessed Bruce, “but I didn't do it, as you can see.”

“Did you call and pretend to be the kidnapper so that Harry could force the bank to release one million dollars for his own use?”

“Yes,” is all that Bruce would say. The prosecutor continued, “I have no more questions of this witness.”

The defense attorney then walked up to
